Meet the experienced and friendly eye doctors and staff who make Great Lakes Vision Care a proud provider of vision care products and services in Monroe, MI.


Christopher A. Burgess, O.D., M.P.H

Dr. Burgess received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1980. He also holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Burgess is fluent in Spanish and has participated in numerous volunteer eye care missions to impoverished areas throughout Central America. He also served for 16 years as an officer in the United States Army Reserve during which time he was deployed with his unit to Kosovo for a year.

Dr. Burgess is a member of both the Michigan and American Optometric Associations and is a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. He is married with two grown children and has practice at Donahue Eyecare for 23 years.


James D. Hardie, O.D.

Dr. James Hardie is originally from Ironwood, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Michigan State University. He graduated with his Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Ohio State University in 2010.

Dr. Hardie was the recipient of the Michigan Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year award. During his time at the Ohio State University he received the College of Optometry’s Graduate of the Year award and the Vision Service Plan Nexus award for ophthalmic dispensing.

He is an active member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, the Toledo Area Optometric Association, the Michigan Optometric Association, the Bedford Business Association, Bedford Lions Club and the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce.

His volunteer activities include: Vice President of the Bedford Business Association, Past President of the Elite Referral Partners, Past Zone governor of the Toledo Area Optometric Society, and Trustee for the Michigan Optometric Association.

Dr. Hardie’s interests include sports, travel, community involvement and Spartan athletics.


Holly A. Hardie, O.D.

Dr. Holly Hardie is originally from Gaylord, Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology from Michigan State University. She graduated with her Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Ohio State University in 2010.

Dr. Hardie has served as Zone Governor of the Toledo Area Optometric Society and is an active member of both the Michigan and Ohio Optometric Associations, along with the American Optometric Association. She also presents the Real Eyes program which teaches children the importance of eye health and proper eye care.

In her spare time, Dr. Hardie enjoys visiting family in Northern Michigan, traveling, and cheering on both the Spartans and the Buckeyes with her husband James.


Ashley M. O’Dwyer, O.D. 

Dr. Ashley O’Dwyer, formerly Ashley Ryckman, received her Doctorate of Optometry from Indiana University College of Optometry in 2017. Her undergraduate studies were done at Lake Superior State University.  She graduated with Honors receiving a Bachelors of Science degree in Biochemistry. Dr. O’Dwyer grew up in Houghton Lake Michigan, graduating from Houghton Lake High School where she participated in varsity basketball and track.

While she worked on her doctorate at Indiana University, Dr. O’Dwyer also completed research on dry eye disease as well as scleral lenses. She presented online workshops for scleral lenses, and was the founding president of Indiana University’s Contact Lens Club. She was also a student fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.

In her free time, Dr. O’Dwyer spends time with her husband Shawn a firefighter for the City of Dearborn. They enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, and being on the water with their dog, Cola.

Dr. O’Dwyer is a strong advocate for medical optometry, believes the patient always comes first, and is excited to serve the community.
